Arrivederci!

A letter from our founders

We are pleased to share the letter below from our Founding Principals, Donna Acquilano and Owen Leslie, regarding their lives, careers, and emeritus status with the firm. In thanks to them, Acquilano Inc. is celebrating 37 years of design as a women-owned business focusing on commercial interiors. Donna and Owen have and will continue to be an integral part of our studio family. We are grateful for the leadership, mentorship, and opportunity to carry their legacy forward.

“After over 40 years in the profession, we are returning to our roots in Crested Butte where we met in 1977. We have enjoyed so many great relationships, clients and coworkers turned friends, and it’s hard to express how meaningful this amazing career in Design and Architecture has been! We have worked through both recessions and booms, always mindful of what could be right around the corner. Denver has been our hub and our love through these years. Contributing to its evolution and watching it become the vibrant city it is today has been an exciting journey. We have so many great memories!

We are thankful to all the people who believed in us and gave us opportunities in the depths of down economies (thinking about the late 80’s and early 2000s) as well as the good times. It’s been our honor to shape workplaces through the decades and create positive impacts on people’s daily lives. We think the design profession is the best profession in the world!

It’s now time for us to enjoy more time with our growing family, to travel, to play more music and to ski powder! We are leaving Acquilano in such fine and capable hands, which is perhaps the achievement that we are most proud of!

Arrivederci!
Donna & Owen”

Acquilano celebrates 35 years of design

35 Years of Design

Acquilano Inc. commemorates its 35th anniversary in 2021 and is celebrating their many decades of sustained success as a women-owned business focusing on corporate interiors. The company was founded in 1986 by Donna Acquilano, who’s sole-proprietor design work was quickly garnering some of Denver’s top commissions. Within a few years her husband, Owen Leslie, joined Donna setting the newly formed family business on its trajectory to become one of Colorado’s top commercial design studios.

Over the past 35 years, Acquilano has consistently demonstrated an ability to creatively solve for the changing demands of the modern workplace. The two emphasized a process that starts with listening to their client’s needs and responding with specific solutions that are uniquely tailored – later adopting the tagline “we listen, then create.” Their legacy continues today under the leadership of Principals Melissa Marlow, Drew Marlow, Ashley Stinson, and Jill Taylor.

While the celebration is year-long, the company recently raised a glass to honor its history and acknowledge the talented professionals currently advancing the firm. With their contributions, Acquilano is enjoying its most notable commissions to-date. The home-team design studio has completed local headquarter facilities for DaVita, Ent Credit Union, Janus Henderson, REMAX, and Zayo and is engaged with some of the state’s most exciting businesses including Comcast, Microsoft, Northwestern Mutual, Perkins Coie, and The Motley Fool.

Donna Acquilano reminisces, “As we celebrate, it’s fun to recount the evolution of our industry. When I started, hand-drafting was the norm and fax machines were cutting edge. While a lot has changed, the importance of great design has remained. The ability to positively influence the daily experience for so many has been extremely fulfilling. We’ve partnered with some exceptional individuals and are excited to devise solutions for this rapidly changing work environment over the next 35 years!”

Workplace Planning for
Today and Beyond

Today’s workplace is so much more than an environment in which to work. It’s a tool that can drive organizational change, improve performance and productivity, bolster employee engagement and attract, retain and motivate talent. It’s also a strategic asset that can communicate corporate mission, branding and cultural messaging.

Creating Balance and Solutions

Such a broad agenda makes the job of planning for tomorrow’s workplace that much more complex for designers who are charged with balancing business and real estate needs while creating solutions that align with corporate mission and deliver competitive advantage.

Recently Knoll hosted members of ONE Global Design, a consortium of owner-led interior design firms in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, to discuss some of the challenges they were experiencing, trends observed and current and future design needs of their corporate clients.

Leveraging the broad geographic diversity and deep expertise of the ONE Global Design network, our discussion goals were to better understand the changing nature of work, especially the global escalation of group-based work, shared-unassigned workspaces and how organizations are planning and allocating space and using furniture to support new ever-more casual workstyles.

FIVE DRIVERS IN WORKPLACE DESIGN

Shape organization culture

Workspaces are instrumental in articulating and expressing company culture.

Attract and retain talent

Spaces are not only where clients and consultants come together, they also function as event space for on-site job fairs and presentations.

Foster Innovation

From the top down, every organization is under pressure to continually innovate to gain or maintain competitive advantage.

Right-size real estate

Virtually all companies are seeking to optimize their real estate.

Reduce silos

Despite widespread adoption of open, collaborative office environments and a growing effort to flatten organizations, many firms still struggle with getting employees to connect outside their immediate department.

Casual and Tech-Influenced are the
New Normal

Aesthetics are strongly influenced by clients’ desire to model technology companies, an industry that many clients relate to. That identity, combined with a continued shift to groupbased workstyles and casual work environments, has given rise to a preference for a more hip design sensibility.

Even traditional legacy companies increasingly view themselves in a more modern context, and want their space to reflect that ambiance, even if they can’t quite articulate it. “We just did an insurance company that decided to call themselves a technology company. Everybody is a technology company now.

“Building in flexibility via modular design and agile furniture is the best solution, since it allows an easy transition from one use to the next, such as small enclosed spaces that can be used as individual offices or meeting rooms, depending on demand.”

The New Math of Free-Address
Environments

Getting the numbers right in designing a free-address environment is not a perfect science, designers concurred. Rather, it’s akin to the software 2.0 model, which focuses on getting to market first and making adjustments later.

In the case of workplace design, that often means doing a pilot study, then refining the design before rolling it out company-wide. Continual monitoring and tweaking elements to make sure they are working optimally should follow installation.
