When relocating from non-contiguous floors across town, Husch Blackwell made plans to embrace different perspectives. “Our goal going forward was to create an efficient and energetic space that did not look like a law firm.”, said Kevin Kelly, managing partner of Husch Blackwell. He also spoke of creating a space reflective of their great culture, something “unexpected”.

Creating an Alternate Environment

Located on the partial ninth floor to drive activity and community into one location, our objective was to offer different styles of seating in a casual environment. Bar-height tables, family-style spaces, and bench seating create an alternate environment for the law group to interface.

“We always get companies saying the want ‘a Colorado vibe’, which usually means mountains or natural materials. But we think of Denver as being this very urban, energetic city that is balanced by the mountains. We loved the fact that in this space, you could look one way and see the mountains, then turn around and get an eyeful of city.” – Melissa Marlow, Principal at Acquilano

“Our goal going forward was to create an efficient and energetic space that did not look like a law firm.”

Where People Want to Be

They took floors above the hip new Indigo Hotel at 1801 Wewatta in the heart of Denver’s transportation district. An expansive reception was planned by Acquilano to capitalize on both mountain and city perspectives. Office sizes were standardized and inset allowing for circulation at the window. Stackable glass partitions make flexible use of the many group spaces, each named for a notable Denver neighborhood. Authentic urban details like blackened-steel mullions and wood slat ceilings dress down the space, while traditional materials like slabs of provide a bit of balance. In the end, we did things different and we built the space “where people want to be”, say Kelly.

“Acquilano Leslie designed a vibrant, urban, 21st-century space for law firm Husch Blackwell. Necessity is the mother of reinvention. At least that’s the case with Husch Blackwell’s hip, new downtown law offices. The necessity? A space that was vibrant, professional, efficient, and one-of-a-kind — and felt connected to the city of Denver.”
